Editor's note
A reassuring data point on the perioperative question that has dominated anesthesiology guidance since 2023, but a limited one: retrospective, single-protocol, and the authors themselves stress it was not powered for equivalence or for rare events such as aspiration. Absence of a detected signal in 98 exposed patients is not proof of safety. Useful context for patients planning body-contouring surgery after GLP-1 weight loss, not a basis to relax pre-operative precautions.
Plain-language abstract
Comparing 98 patients on semaglutide or tirzepatide with 98 controls undergoing lipoabdominoplasty under general anesthesia, researchers found no significant differences in anesthesia complications, recovery times, or early post-surgical problems.
