Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists for Obstructive Sleep Apnea With and Without Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.
Editor's note
The effect size on apnea-hypopnea index is large and clinically meaningful, and the finding that it persists alongside CPAP use is the more interesting result for readers already on airway therapy. The evidence base is thin, though: five trials, under a thousand patients, and the tirzepatide data come largely from the SURMOUNT-OSA programme, so the pooled estimate is not independent of one sponsor's trials. Read this as consolidating an already-known signal rather than establishing a new one.
Plain-language abstract
This meta-analysis pooled five randomized trials covering 948 patients to assess incretin drugs, chiefly tirzepatide and liraglutide, in obstructive sleep apnea. On average the apnea-hypopnea index fell 12.4 more events per hour than in control groups, and the effect held whether or not patients were also using CPAP. Weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure also improved, while gastrointestinal side effects were more common in the drug groups.
