Glutathione
Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide (gamma-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine) and the body's principal intracellular thiol antioxidant, synthesized in virtually every cell and present at especially high concentrations in the liver. Its physiological importance is well established: it buffers oxidative stress, maintains the redox state of proteins, and serves as a cofactor in detoxification enzymology. That solid biochemistry, however, sits uneasily beside the marketing around supplemental and intravenous glutathione, which is widely promoted for 'detox' and, especially in IV form, skin-lightening. The gap between glutathione's genuine intracellular role and the claims made for injectable and oral products is where most of the confusion lies.
Side effects & risks
Oral glutathione is generally well tolerated, with mild gastrointestinal complaints being the most commonly reported issues. The risk profile changes substantially with intravenous and injectable use. IV glutathione, particularly for skin-lightening, has been associated with reported serious adverse reactions, including rare but severe cutaneous reactions of the Stevens-Johnson syndrome / toxic epidermal necrolysis type, as well as reports of thyroid, kidney, and other systemic effects. Concerns about the safety and unproven benefit of injectable skin-lightening glutathione have prompted regulatory warnings in several countries, including cautions from national drug authorities against off-label injectable use. Any injectable or infused product also carries the general risks of parenteral administration: infection, sterility failures, embolism, and reactions to contaminants, which are magnified when products are compounded or sourced outside regulated channels. Allergic and hypersensitivity reactions are possible with any route. For these reasons, IV and injectable glutathione should only be considered under the supervision of a qualified clinician, never self-administered. Oral capsules and liposomal preparations are commonly marketed in the range of roughly 250-1000 mg per day, often framed around antioxidant support. Intravenous glutathione, marketed for skin-lightening and 'detox,' is reported in single-session doses that can reach several hundred to over a thousand milligrams, sometimes on repeated schedules; because it is a parenteral infusion, it should be administered only by a qualified clinician in an appropriate setting. Injectable (intramuscular or subcutaneous) and nebulized/inhaled forms also appear in the marketplace, the latter marketed for respiratory contexts.
