Selank is usually studied for anxiety and memory, but this study asked whether it also has antidepressant-like effects in animals. Researchers used two models: rats (WAG/Rij) that show depression-like behavior for genetic reasons, and mice (BALB/c) made to show depression-like behavior by their situation. Ordinary Wistar rats served as a comparison. In the genetically prone rats, high, repeated doses of Selank reduced depression-like signs, such as giving up sooner in a swim test and losing interest in sugar water (a sign of reduced pleasure). In the mice, a single low dose reduced 'giving-up' behavior, but higher or repeated doses did not. Selank did not change general activity or anxiety in the prone rats, or behavior in the ordinary rats. This was an animal study using behavior tests, with effects that depended on dose and model. It suggests Selank may have an antidepressant-like component, but that is early animal evidence, not a finding about depression in people.
