A rat study in BPC-157's strongest preclinical territory — gastrointestinal healing. Researchers created duodenocolic fistulas and report that BPC-157 (10 µg/kg or 10 ng/kg, given locally, orally in drinking water, or intraperitoneally) was associated with closure of both bowel defects, no leakage, stable weight, less adhesion formation and less obstruction, versus persistent fistulas and weight loss in controls; they also report shifts in nitric-oxide-synthase and VEGF-related gene expression. The functional endpoints over 1–28 days make this more substantive than the acute “occlusion” papers, and it fits BPC-157's better-developed GI wound-healing signal. Caveats remain: rodent model, and the wider evidence base is dominated by a single patent-holding laboratory with limited independent replication. This is preclinical — encouraging as a mechanistic and functional signal, but no human GI data exist. BPC-157's US status is removed from the FDA Category-2 list, pending review. Human data are needed before clinical conclusions.

Plain-language abstract

This was a study in rats. Surgeons created an abnormal connection (a fistula) between the small intestine and the colon, which normally fails to close on its own — control rats kept leaking, lost weight, and developed blockages. Some rats received BPC-157, a synthetic peptide, either directly at the wound, in their drinking water, or by injection into the abdomen, over periods from 1 to 28 days. The study reported that treated rats closed both bowel holes, stopped leaking, kept their weight, and had fewer internal adhesions and blockages. The authors also measured changes in genes tied to blood-vessel growth and healing. Because this is an animal study, it suggests BPC-157 may aid this kind of gut healing in rats, but it does not show the same happens in humans; human research would be needed. The abstract does not report specific adverse effects of the peptide.
