This rat study extends the same group's vascular “collateral pathway” hypothesis to the eye. In a glaucoma model (three of four episcleral veins cauterised to raise intraocular pressure) plus several corneal and retinal injury models, researchers report that BPC-157 regimens were associated with rapid normalisation of intraocular pressure and preservation of retinal, optic nerve and corneal structures. That is a broad set of claims across many eye conditions in one paper — striking, but each endpoint rests on relatively small rodent groups and short observation, and the mechanistic story (one remaining episcleral vein “upgrading”) is the authors' interpretation. This is preclinical: no human ophthalmology data exist for BPC-157, and the wider evidence base is dominated by a single patent-holding laboratory. Treat it as hypothesis-generating for eye applications, not a basis for use. BPC-157's US status is removed from the FDA Category-2 list, pending review. Human data are needed before any clinical conclusions.

Plain-language abstract

This was a study in rats, not people. To mimic glaucoma, researchers cauterised most of the small veins draining one eye, which raised the pressure inside the eye; they also tested other eye injuries such as corneal scrapes, ulcers, dry eye and reduced blood flow to the retina. Some rats then received BPC-157, a synthetic peptide. The study reported that BPC-157 quickly brought the eye pressure back to normal and that treated eyes kept relatively normal retinas, optic nerves, pupil responses and clear corneas. The authors attribute this to blood being rerouted through a remaining vein. Because these are animal experiments covering many conditions in one report, and were observed over short periods, they suggest possible effects rather than proving BPC-157 helps human eye disease; studies in people would be needed. The abstract does not report specific side effects.
