[Comparative study of the effects of melatonin and epitalon on the protracted memory under the shuttle labyrinth test conditions in rats in the course of aging].

A two-year rat study of learning and long-term memory comparing chronic melatonin and epitalon during aging, using a shuttle-maze test. The authors report that neither agent affected learning in young or adult rats, but in old rats melatonin was associated with better-preserved long-term memory and epitalon with reduced memory impairment (described as 'mnemotropic' effects). This is a behavioural-aging signal, more meaningful than a pure marker study, but the abstract gives no group sizes, effect magnitudes, or blinding details, and epitalon's effect is framed only qualitatively. It sits within the single-lineage pineal-peptide literature with limited independent replication, and behavioural rodent findings translate uncertainly to human cognition. These are preclinical findings; human data are needed before clinical conclusions can be drawn.

The abstract does not state how many animals were used, the size of the effects, or whether the assessments were done blind. No side effects are reported, and results in rodents do not necessarily carry over to human memory. This is early animal research.
