This is a mechanistic neuroscience study, not an efficacy trial for epitalon. In a Wistar rat model, researchers tracked two protein markers — c-Fos (a marker of neuron activation) and interleukin-2 — across anterior hypothalamic structures under handling stress, adaptation to it, and intranasal saline, Vilon, or epitalon. The study reported that cell activation generally correlated with fewer IL-2-positive cells, with distinct patterns across treatments and adaptation states. Epitalon here is one of several interventions, so the design isolates little about its specific action, and the readout is correlational protein counts rather than behaviour or any clinical outcome. Weight this as an exploratory preclinical observation within the post-Soviet pineal-peptide research tradition — a literature dominated by a single research group with limited independent replication. These are preclinical findings; human data are needed before clinical conclusions can be drawn.

Scientists studied how rat brain cells respond to different treatments by counting cells that showed two proteins: c-Fos (a sign that a neuron has been activated) and interleukin-2 (an immune signalling molecule). In Wistar rats, they compared mild stress (handling) and adaptation to it against liquid delivered into the nose — either plain salt water or the peptides Vilon or epitalon. Across most of the hypothalamic regions examined, when more cells were activated (more c-Fos), fewer cells showed interleukin-2, and the pattern of change differed depending on the treatment and on whether the animals had adapted to stress. The work maps correlations between brain-cell activation and an immune protein; it does not measure behaviour, health, or any outcome in people. Because epitalon was only one of several treatments tested, the study says little about the peptide on its own. No side effects are reported. This is early animal research.
