[The effect of pineal peptide preparations on proliferative activity in organotypic culture of the preoptic hypothalamus area].

This in-vitro study used organotypic cultures of the hypothalamic preoptic area to test whether the pineal peptides epitalon and epithalamin affect cell proliferation in tissue from young (3-month) and old (24-month) female rats. Researchers reported that both peptides stimulated proliferative activity of the explants, that epithalamin was more effective in young than old tissue, and that epitalon produced a similar, less pronounced growth-zone effect in both age groups — an effect they describe as tissue-specific and possibly linked to inhibited apoptosis. This is a cell/tissue-culture study with a proliferation endpoint, informative about how epitalon might act on hypothalamic tissue but not evidence of a functional or clinical outcome. Concentrations were very low (epitalon 2 ng/ml). It sits within epitalon's neuroendocrine research theme from the originating lineage. These are preclinical findings; human in-vivo data are needed before any clinical conclusions can be drawn.

The tissue came from both young (3-month-old) and old (24-month-old) female rats. Researchers reported that both peptides, used at very low concentrations, increased cell growth activity in the tissue. Epithalamin worked better in tissue from young animals than from old ones, while epitalon had a similar but weaker growth-stimulating effect in tissue from both young and old animals. The authors noted the effect was specific to this tissue and might be related to the peptides reducing programmed cell death. This was a study of brain tissue grown in dishes, not in living animals or people; it reported no side-effect data and does not show a clinical effect.
