This is a pharmaceutical-crime surveillance study, not a pharmacology paper. As part of the international Operation Pangea enforcement week, European agencies searched 2014 seizures for falsified antibiotics and biopharmaceutical injectables; sermorelin was among the few peptide/protein products found, alongside human growth hormone, melanotan II, and preparations with no active ingredient. Its relevance to sermorelin is entirely contextual and cautionary: it documents that falsified, unlabelled sermorelin was entering the European grey market, often in shipment sizes suggesting resale rather than personal use, and that such injectables pose a health risk precisely because they lack labelling and may contain unlicensed or absent ingredients. There is no efficacy, dosing, or clinical content. For readers, the actionable point is about supply-chain safety, not the drug's pharmacology: products identified this way carry no assurance of identity, purity, or sterility. Sermorelin's clinical evidence — historical paediatric GH-deficiency approval, insufficient adult data — is untouched by this report.

Plain-language abstract

This study was part of an international enforcement effort against pharmaceutical crime, looking at fake and unlicensed medicines seized in Europe. During a coordinated week of action in 2014 (Operation Pangea 7), national agencies in twelve European countries searched seized medicines for falsified antibiotics and falsified injectable biological drugs (peptides and proteins). In total they reported about 21,000 dose units of falsified antibiotics, mostly unlicensed versions of common drugs. Very few falsified injectable biological products were found; laboratories reported human growth hormone, sermorelin, melanotan II, and some products containing no active ingredient at all. The typical shipment was too large for one person's use, suggesting much of it was meant for resale. The authors warn that these falsified injectables are dangerous because they lack proper labelling and may contain unlicensed drugs, and that fake medicines in Europe are not limited to erectile-dysfunction pills. The study is a snapshot of what enters the illicit market; it reports nothing about the effects, correct dosing, or safety of sermorelin or the other substances when properly made.
