Researchers validated an assay to detect 11 prohibited small peptides in urine — gonadorelin, desmopressin, and nine GHRPs including ipamorelin and hexarelin — using cation-exchange clean-up and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. It performed well on the usual analytical measures (low detection limits, acceptable recovery and precision), with proof-of-principle shown for LHRH, desmopressin, and GHRP-2 in real excretion-study urine. Ipamorelin and hexarelin appear only as target analytes. This is surveillance infrastructure: it confirms these peptides can be reliably detected and are treated as banned substances, but it provides no information about efficacy, safety, or dosing in people. There are no human outcomes and no clinical endpoints. Readers should treat it purely as regulatory-testing context, with the human evidence base for these GH-secretagogues residing elsewhere and remaining limited to sparse pharmacodynamic work.

This study developed and validated a single laboratory test to detect 11 banned small peptides in urine for sports drug testing. The list included gonadorelin (LH-RH), desmopressin, and nine growth-hormone-releasing peptides such as ipamorelin and hexarelin. Samples were cleaned up using a cation-exchange step and then analysed with a highly sensitive form of mass spectrometry. The researchers checked the method against standard quality measures — how specifically it identified each peptide, how low a concentration it could detect (a few picograms per millilitre), how well it recovered the peptides, and how consistent it was. To show the test worked on real samples, they successfully detected LH-RH, desmopressin, and GHRP-2 in urine from people who had taken those substances. The method is also expandable to cover more targets in future. This is purely a detection-method study: it does not examine whether ipamorelin, hexarelin, or any of the other peptides help or harm the body, and reports no effects or side effects.
