Doping control analysis of seven bioactive peptides in horse plasma by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

This study created a cheaper, simpler laboratory method to detect several performance-related peptides in horse blood as part of anti-doping efforts. Usually these tests rely on costly antibodies to isolate peptides; instead the researchers used a low-cost extraction cartridge followed by high-resolution mass spectrometry to pull out and measure seven peptides at once — including ipamorelin, hexarelin, GHRP-6, CJC-1295, and the active ingredient of TB-500. The method could detect all of them at very low concentrations. To show it worked in practice, the team gave two thoroughbred horses an injection of TB-500 (10 mg) under the skin and successfully detected the compound and one of its breakdown products in their blood. A useful feature is that the stored data can be re-analysed later to search for other peptides not originally targeted. This is a detection-method study only: aside from confirming the drug could be measured after dosing, it does not investigate any health effect, benefit, or side effect of these peptides.
