AI Patient Support and 6-Month Medication Adherence in a Digital Obesity Program: A Retrospective Analysis.

Talay L, Xu C, Alderete J, et al. Diabetes, obesity & metabolism. 2026.

Editor's note

Staying on semaglutide is a known weak point in commercial weight-loss programs, and this large retrospective analysis tests whether an AI support agent moves the needle. It does not: after adjustment, the AI era was actually associated with slightly higher attrition, while program cost, pauses, and very high-intensity tracking in month one were the dominant predictors of dropping off. The finding is observational and specific to one Australian program, but it is a useful caution against assuming chatbots solve GLP-1 persistence.

Plain-language abstract

In a study of more than 16,000 Australians on semaglutide through a digital weight-loss program, adding an AI chatbot did not by itself keep people on their medication. Cost, program pauses, and obsessive early tracking were bigger drivers of whether people stuck with therapy for six months.
