This prescription-sequence analysis reports semaglutide as the dominant agent and finds inverse associations with later antidepressant and substance-use medication starts. The design detects temporal patterns but cannot establish causation or rule out confounding by indication. Regard the inverse associations as signals warranting dedicated study rather than evidence of a therapeutic effect.
Plain-language abstract
Using Australian prescription data, this analysis found that starting a GLP-1 receptor agonist (semaglutide being the most common) was associated with lower subsequent initiation of antidepressants and substance-use-disorder medications. No associations were seen for other neuropsychiatric medication categories.
