Effectiveness & safety of semaglutide in weight reduction in obese nondiabetic patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Editor's note
Pooling four randomized controlled trials, this meta-analysis provides high-quality evidence that semaglutide is associated with substantial weight reduction in non-diabetic adults. The safety picture is balanced, with clearly higher rates of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation and more discontinuations, though serious events were uncommon. The authors appropriately note that long-term durability data are still needed.
Plain-language abstract
This meta-analysis of four randomized trials (3,613 participants) found that semaglutide produced roughly 11.85% greater weight loss than placebo in non-diabetic adults with overweight or obesity. Gastrointestinal side effects and treatment discontinuation were more common, while serious adverse events were rare.
